UPPER SCHOOL PRINCIPAL
March 20, 2009
The Upper School Service Oriented Students Club would like to remind the EARJ community of the
5th Annual Walk Against Cancer. Family and friends are welcome to join us in the walk around Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, starting at Parque dos Patins, on Sunday, March 22 at 10:00 a.m. Proceeds of the event will assist in the building of a pediatric cancer hospital. The event will take place rain or shine.
We are currently updating and revising the Upper School course descriptions and course registration guide for next year. Students will be registering for 2009-2010 classes during the last week of April. Time will pass quickly between now and then, and it is never too early to plan for one’s future. We are here to help students achieve success in school and in life. As always, we encourage you to contact us if you have questions.

Only three more weeks of school until the 3rd quarter comes to a close. Please take a moment to review your child’s mid-quarter academic progress with them, while we still have time to address concerns. If you do not currently monitor your child’s progress on Power School, our on-line data management system, we strongly encourage you to do so. Please contact the office if you have questions or need assistance.
I take this opportunity to emphasize, once again, the importance of school attendance. The remainder of the year will pass quickly. There are plenty of opportunities for family or personal travel built into the school calendar, so please avoid taking students out of school when classes are in session.
Fundaçao Estudar deadline
A reminder to those Brazilian seniors who want to apply for the Fundação Estudar scholarships, the online application deadline is this Sunday, March 15! Check their website at www.estudar.org.br

It has been another great week in the Upper School. On Wednesday, we were treated to a fine performance by five choral music groups from Villanova University. Two of our teachers, Mr. Wozniak and Mr. Loveland, helped the 64 college students to visit crèches in Flamengo and Rocinha. We truly appreciate when collegiate groups visit and share their talents with us.
Congratulations to the 40 students who took the DELF (French language proficiency) exam in November. Madame Nitsch sends a special “félicitations” to Roberto for his success in the C1, the most advanced diploma offered. Roberto is the first EARJ student to take this test.
Congratulations, also, to our basketball teams for their efforts at the International Basketball Tournament at Greengates School, Mexico City. The girls won the Gold medal after defeating Greengates School by 2 points in the final game. The boys lost to Universitario Mexicano by 2 points in the final game. The coaches, Mr. Marcos Mendes and Mr. Gustavo Dias, and the Athletic Director, Ms. Neíse Abreu, were very proud of the attitude and behavior displayed by the players during the trip.
Mid-quarter student progress grades will be available next week on PowerSchool Parents.

On behalf of the faculty and staff, I am delighted to share with you that 44 Upper School students were named to the Honor Roll and 39 were named to the Headmaster’s List for their outstanding academic achievement during 2nd Quarter. Honor Roll recognition is awarded to students whose weighted academic average is 88 or above with no grade below 80. Headmaster’s List recognition is awarded to students whose weighted academic average is 94 or above with no grade below 85. It is always a pleasure to reward young people for their hard work in the classroom.
Outside of the classroom, our extra-curricular activities are back in action. The futsal, volleyball, softball, and cheerleading teams will be practicing and competing on the court and field for the next couple of months in preparation for the Big 4 tournament April 14-18. We are very thankful for the generous support our school receives from our school community and corporate sponsors, and we are proud of the hard work and dedication shown by our students and their coaches. Please consider attending a game this season to cheer on our students to victory.
With the start of the new semester, parents are reminded that school policy requires a written request to excuse student absences by 9:00 a.m. on the day of the absence. If parents do not notify the school within 24 hours of the student’s return to school, the absence is recorded as unexcused.
Please remind your children that electronic devices are not allowed in the classroom. Cell phones, Ipods, Blackberrys, and the like are distracting for teachers and students alike. By policy, these items are taken away from students until the end of the school day. As always, your support and reinforcement of our efforts to help your children be successful in school are appreciated.
