The Scholastic and Jamer Books Book Fair in Gávea was a big success! A special thank you is extended to the parents and teachers for their support during the fair. The students showed a lot of enthusiasm buying books for their home collection.

Students and teachers are thrilled with the addition of a new technology equipment/learning tool in Barra! The electronic, interactive white board helps make lessons, presentations, and storytelling (through electronic books) more alive and meaningful for children of all ages.

The Barra Book Fair will take place on April 2nd. We will be celebrating International Book Day.

Gávea and Barra first graders will be going on a field trip to Museu do Indio on Thursday, March 26th. The trip is an enrichment of their Language Arts/Social Studies unit on Native Americans/Native Brazilians.

The Gávea second graders are planning a “Pet Day Presentation” on Friday, March 27th from 8:00 – 8:30 A.M. on the LS playground. This activity is part of their science unit on “Animal and Plant Populations”.

Escola Americana Music Department proudly announces a violin concert to be presented in the auditorium on Thursday, March 26th for Lower and Middle School students. Guest musician, Manoela Guimarães is a graduate of EARJ from the class of 2004.

Destination Imagination (DI): The DI Celebration is fast approaching and will take place March 26 – 28th at EARJ. Creativity, teamwork and problem solving take center stage as the various teams present solutions to challenges. We will welcome students from other South American International Schools, including Brazil.

The LS students are getting ready for our annual Talent Show. On April 1st, over 40 students from grades 2 – 5 will have the chance to share their talent with classmates, teachers, friends and families. Children will dance, sing, play the piano and violin, do gymnastics, and present skits. You’ll be amazed! Don’t miss out! This year’s show in on April 1st at 18:30 in the auditorium. See you there!

A group of professional educators and school leaders from California will be conducting two featured presentations and a series of breakout sessions during an In-service for the EARJ faculty which will be held at the Gávea campus on Wednesday, April 8th from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Saturday, May 9th is the new date for the Sports Camp in Gávea. This sports event is being organized by the Senior Class (12th graders) for Lower School students in 2nd – 5th grade. More information will follow shortly.

A special Welcome Back to our 4th graders who were on an off campus, experiential education retreat at Nosso Recanto. The entire week was filled with fun and unforgettable learning experiences for all!

Congratulations to Ms. Tatiana’s and Ms. Bel’s Kindergarten classes. They worked hard last week and met their goal – to bring 40 cans of milk for the children at the day care centers in Rocinha. This was their special “show and tell’ project for the week and we are very proud of their efforts and successes!

A professional photographer will be on campus next week to take do picture retakes of those students who were absent or are new. Ms. Marilia Brandao will be at the Barra campus on Tuesday, March 17th and at the Gávea campus on Thursday, March 19th.

The Gávea Scholastic & Jamer Books Book Fair will take place at the LS Library Media Center next week (from March 16 – 20). Parents and children can attend the fair and choose books together. Be sure to check your child’s agenda or folder today for the book fair schedule. Parents are also welcome to buy books after school hours until 3:30 p.m.

News from the 5th grade Brazilian Geography classes: Congratulations to our 5th grade students who have been busy working on special projects and presentations about the different states of Brazil. Delicious treats, typical artifacts, and a folkloric dance group from Rio Grande do Sul helped illustrate and enrich their unit of studies about Brazil. A very special “thank you” to Ms. Xuxa Meneghel who was responsible for bringing the dance group and making this rich cultural experience possible for our 5th graders.

LS Field Days were a hit! Our Kinder-5th grade students enjoyed their day of games and sports that culminated with a water slide. We were delighted that our Barra K-2nd grade students joined us for this event which emphasized fair play, friendship and fun. Congratulations to the Lower School Physical Education Department for organizing this wonderful annual event for our students.

We also extend a special thank you to all LS parents who attended the PTA / LS Principal Breakfast this past Tuesday in the MuseOn. The next LS Parent Breakfast with the Principal will be Tuesday, May 12th.

Congratulations to our Barra Kinder class, whose students donated 18 cans of milk for our Milk Campaign this week! Your generosity is greatly appreciated!

4th graders will head off on their annual off-campus, experiential education retreat to Nosso Recanto next week! Technology willing, we will endeavor to send daily email updates to 4th grade parents.

2nd graders in Gávea and in Barra will be going on a field trip to “Fazenda Estação Natureza” next Wednesday, March 11th. This is a culminating activity for the unit on Animal Classification.

We are delighted to announce our upcoming Gávea Scholastic & Jamer Books Book Fair which will take place from March 16th to March 20th. A letter will be sent home next week with the book fair schedule so that parents can join the children and choose books together. Parents are also welcome to buy books after school hours until 3:30 p.m.

Thank you to LS parents who attended the PTA Newcomers’ Breakfast in Gávea and in Barra this week. The turnout was excellent. That’s the community spirit and home-school partnership that makes EA so special!

Thank you to our 4th grade parents who attended the meeting about the upcoming student retreat which will take place from March 9 – 13 at Nosso Recanto. We are delighted to offer this experience to our 4th graders once again this year – a much anticipated and beloved off-campus experiential education trip.

All new LS parents are invited to join the Counselors and Principals for an informal get-together to talk about the transition and adaptation process. Come share your experiences and insights. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 10th in room 412.

We are happy to inform you that we have expanded our Toddler Program (for 2 year olds) in Barra. Our morning group is full and so we will begin an afternoon Toddler group as of February 9th.

100th day of school in K/1st: Students have been busy creating projects that demonstrate 100. On the 100th day of school this Thursday, students presented their wonderful projects.

The LS Animation “The Great Kapok Tree” (A Grande Sumaúma) is scheduled to be aired on TV Futura, Globo’s educational channel, on Sunday, February 8th at 7:30 P.M. The name of the program is Anime-se. Congratulations to Ms. Barbara Artagão and our LS student animation team!

A friendly reminder that Wednesday is Milk Campaign Day. Last semester, thanks to everyone’s generosity, our campaign was a tremendous success. We collected a total of 1698 cans of milk that were distributed to three “creches” (day care centers) in Rocinha. Creches are most grateful. Our drive will continue this semester in both Gávea and Barra!

The Preschool Team cordially invites all preschool parents to the second semester Open House. Come visit your child’s classroom, meet the teachers and other parents, and enjoy a unique learning experience together. We hope to see you at 8:15 A.M. on:

LS ‘Shine On’ recognition celebration will honor Ms. Lucia’s 4th grade class and in Ms. Bel’s Kinder class on February 16th. Ms. Susan’s Kinder’s class in Barra will be recognized on February 18th at 8 a.m. Parents of students in these two classes are encouraged to join us as we recognize each child for a specific disposition or EA value. By the end of the school year, all LS students, K-5th grade will be honored.

LS Carnival Celebrations are about to begin! Students in all grade levels will be involved in special activities related to Rio’s most popular cultural event. Our Portuguese Department together with homeroom and specials teachers are working together to provide rich cultural experiences for our students. February 20th will be our official Carnival SPIRIT Day in LS and students will be encouraged to dress up.
